Why it matters

Training after 55 should prepare you for life—not just the gym.

Ageing changes muscle, strength, power, balance and recovery. It does not remove your ability to improve. The right programme gives you an appropriate starting point and a clear path forward.

Your body changes with age

Your training should change with it.

Senior strength training is not about pushing through pain or copying a younger person's workout. It is about building the physical qualities that protect your independence and quality of life.

Muscle and strength

Preserve your muscle, strength and power.

Age-related loss of muscle and strength is known as sarcopenia. It can make everyday tasks feel progressively harder, but resistance training gives your muscles a reason to remain capable.

We train for practical outcomes: standing from a chair, carrying your luggage, opening jars, climbing stairs and continuing to enjoy an active retirement.

Bones, joints and balance

Build a more resilient body.

Appropriate resistance, balance and mobility training can support bone health, joint function and confidence in movement. Exercises are selected around your current range of motion, comfort and medical considerations.

The goal is to help you walk more steadily, manage stairs, move with less hesitation and remain confident in the activities that matter to you.

Independence and quality of life

Keep doing the things that make life yours.

Travel on your own terms, walk farther without tiring as quickly, enjoy hobbies and spend active time with your grandchildren. Functional strength helps everyday movement stay available to you.

Training now is an investment in the freedom, confidence and independence you want to carry into your 70s, 80s and beyond.

Long-term health

Train around your health—not against it.

Physical activity can support strength, energy, sleep, mental well-being and the management of common health risks. Your trainer will take your health history, medications, injuries and doctor's guidance into account.

Personal training is not medical treatment or physiotherapy. If you have significant symptoms or an unstable medical condition, we may ask you to obtain clearance from a qualified healthcare professional first.

You do not need to be fit before you start.

Your first programme is based on what you can do safely today—not on what someone your age is “supposed” to do.

Strength for real life

We do not just train muscles. We train the movements behind your daily life.

Every exercise should have a purpose you can feel outside the gym.

01

Standing up

Squats and sit-to-stands build the leg strength needed to rise from chairs, sofas and toilets with greater control.

02

Stairs and steps

Step-ups and single-leg exercises prepare you for staircases, kerbs, buses and uneven ground.

03

Carrying things

Loaded carries build grip, trunk and whole-body strength for groceries, luggage and household tasks.

04

Balance and reactions

Progressive balance work improves control and confidence when walking, turning and changing direction.

05

Getting off the floor

When appropriate, we practise the strength and movement sequence needed to return to standing.

06

Enjoying retirement

Conditioning helps you walk farther, travel, garden, play with grandchildren and stay involved socially.

What makes senior training different

Safe does not mean easy. It means appropriate, controlled and progressive.

Your trainer adjusts the exercise, range, support, resistance and pace to match your ability. We progress only when your movement and confidence are ready.

1

Health-aware

We discuss health conditions, injuries, medications and relevant guidance before building your plan.

2

Function-led

Strength, mobility and balance are connected to the everyday activities you want to preserve.

3

Joint-conscious

Exercises and ranges are selected around your current comfort instead of forcing painful movement.

4

Progressive

Your programme becomes more challenging gradually, with technique and control coming first.

Evidence-based direction

Move strong. Stay balanced.

Singapore's physical activity guidelines for older adults combine aerobic activity, muscle strengthening, balance and functional training. Personal training helps turn those broad recommendations into a programme suited to your starting point.

Frequently asked questions

Starting safely and confidently.

Still unsure? Choose your nearest location and speak directly with a trainer.

Speak to a trainer
Is it safe for older adults to lift weights?

Strength training can be appropriate and beneficial for older adults when the exercises, resistance and progression match the individual. We begin with a movement and health discussion rather than placing you immediately into a demanding workout.

What makes Homeground's approach different for seniors?

We prioritise strength, mobility, stability, balance and functional movement. Your programme is tailored around your current ability, health history and the everyday activities you want to perform more confidently.

What if I have high blood pressure, diabetes, knee pain or another health condition?

Tell us before your first session. Your trainer can adjust exercise selection, resistance and pace around appropriate limitations. Personal training does not replace medical care, and we may request clearance from your doctor or physiotherapist where appropriate.

I have never trained before. Is it too late to start?

No. Many clients begin later in life without gym experience. Your progress may look different from a younger person's, but strength, balance, energy and confidence can still improve with appropriate, consistent training.

How can I help my parent feel comfortable trying personal training?

Start with one conversation rather than a commitment. You may contact us on your parent's behalf and join the initial discussion. We will explain the process, learn what matters to them and begin at a level that feels manageable.

Is senior personal training the same as physiotherapy?

No. Physiotherapy assesses and treats injuries and medical conditions. Personal training builds fitness, strength and function after it is appropriate to exercise. If your needs are clinical, we will recommend consulting the relevant healthcare professional.

How often should I train?

The appropriate frequency depends on your health, goals, recovery and other activity. Many clients start with one or two coached strength sessions each week, supported by suitable walking, balance or mobility activity.

Do personal-training clients need a gym membership?

No compulsory gym membership is required for Homeground personal-training clients.

Which Homeground location should I choose?

Usually, the most convenient open gym is the best place to begin. We currently train clients at Ang Mo Kio, Balestier, Clementi, Farrer Park, Hougang, Jurong West, Tampines and Woodlands, with Bishan and Kampong Glam opening in 2026.
